I was informed by my uncle that my cat that has been living with him is starting to get mats. She is a really beautiful cat with unique colours and he's thinking about shaving her. Once she lost some fur due to an allergic reaction and the fur that came back in came back in all black. I'm worried that if he shave her this might happen to all of her. Is there anyway to avoid shaving all of her, is it possible to cut out the mats? She isn't a long haired cat and I'm not sure how bad the mats are. She also is an extremely fussy cat when it comes to grooming and is known to horrifically attack people. What is the best route to ensure she stays beautiful, healthy, and doesn't kill somebody =)

You are right to be concerned and many professional will still attempt to shave the cat as it is the easiest course. However, one we shave fur it comes back in poor condition and mats much faster and continuously after shaving. (The breeds of dogs that get clipped have hair not fur so this is why it works for them)

We do not recommend shaving animals who have fur though sometimes there is no getting around it if the pet is too matted to de-mat or it is a medical concern, pet of an advanced age that can't groom itself now or can't thermo regulate it's body temp then we would weigh the pros and cons and decide the best course.

Your pets fur will likely come back mainly the same colour with a potential for minor change as it is coming in. This temporary colour change is because unless your pet is a solid colour all through the individual shafts of fur are varying shades at varied length of fur. I.E. May be darker at the top land shade lighter as you gown down the particular shaft or vice versa. Look at an individual shaft of fur on a multicoloured cat and you will see the variation when the hair fur shaft. Once back to full length there should be no noticeable difference in colour.

The possible reason for the issue previously is the fur loss being due to ill health (allergy) may have caused follicle and or dermis damage altering the re-growth it is not unusual to see this.

Texture however will change and the coat will grow back with more problems matting because of this change. Depending on the severity of the mats, their position and if your cat is co-operative de-matting may be an option if not I suggest simply spot shaving the affected areas, if there are not large areas affected by the mats. This is not attractive but may save trouble in the end.

Can you email me your cats age and pictures of the cat with the mats this will help me to offer more specific advice and in the mean time. I am working on a de-matting your cat article which should be posted but the end of the weekend, but in the mean time email me specifics and I can give you direct advice on your cat in particular.

I hope this helps and be sure to let me know how it turns out in the end.
